巨匠ジャック・ベッケルが実在した女性をモデルに描いた恋愛悲劇。美しい娼婦（しょうふ）マリーは、ある日出会った大工のマンダと互いに強くひかれあった。しかし、嫉妬（しっと）にかられたマリーの恋人と決闘せねばならなくなったマンダは、ついに相手を殺してしまう。田舎に身を隠したマンダのもとにマリーが現れ、二人はつかの間の愛をはぐくむが、そこには残酷な運命が待ち受けていた。
